Woman suffers fit after eating suspect food
A woman who suffered an epileptic fit had been infected by a parasite from eating suspected undercooked food, Shanghai Punan Hospital said yesterday.
Doctors say people should take extra care when dining at local restaurants serving the popular crawfish during summer. Their advice is to refrain from eating undercooked aquatic food and make sure that raw food doesn’t contaminate kitchen ware used to process or contain cooked food.
The female patient was diagnosed with “cerebral paragonimiasis,” which means that the parasite, known as paragonimiasis, invaded her brain and caused the symptoms.
The hospital said a CT test located an unusual tumor in her brain. A parasite screening showed that she was paragonimiasis positive.
The patient told doctors she often ate aquatic food such as shrimps and crabs, both considered to be intermediate hosts of the parasite.
She was admitted to Punan Hospital and would probably be released after a few days after anti-parasite, anti-epilepsy and cerebral edema prevention treatment, the hospital said.
