Work starts to repair bridge
REPARATION work on the Bund’s Waibaidu Bridge started yesterday and will last 20 days, Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said.
A part of the structure of the iconic 109-year-old steel truss bridge on the eastern side was damaged after a truck hit the bridge about 5am on April 25.
The reparation will replace the injured steel parts with stronger versions, but the look and structure of the bridge will not be changed, the bureau said.
During the first five days the reparation will focus on restoring the damaged parts, while the rest of the 20-day period will be dedicated to riveting work.
During the period, the pedestrian walk on the eastern side and one of the motor vehicle lanes will be closed, but vehicles and pedestrians will be able to use the bridge in both directions during daytime.
From tomorrow to June 24 all motor vehicle lanes on the bridge will be shut down between 12 and 4:30am, but the pedestrian walk on the western side will remain open.
