Worker dies after inhaling nitrogen gas
A WORKER at Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao Company died after inhaling nitrogen and another person was injured while examining facilities linked with phenol, the company said.
Authorities are conducting an investigation, Shanghai Work Safety Administration told Shanghai Daily.
The two workers were found lying unconscious in a reactor that probably leaked the gas, the company said.
They were rushed to the No. 7 People’s Hospital around 9:30am. The 29-year-old man named Gao Ming was declared dead but his colleague, another man Da Jiuping, 48, was making recovery, the hospital said. But Da is still in the Intensive Care Unit, it added.
There have been previous reports of accidents in the same company. Last year, a leak was detected in a pipeline delivering naphtha, an inflammable product from the Sinopec plant in Pudong New Area to another petrochemical company in Jinshan District.
Thiols had leaked during facility maintenance at the end of 2010, polluting air in surrounding district. Months later, sulfurated hydrogen leaked in 2011 March.
