Workers fix burst water pipe
WORKERS completed repairs yesterday on a major water pipe in Putuo District that suddenly burst on Tuesday, causing flooding that paralysed traffic on nearby roads.
The underground iron pipe, which is 1,200 millimeters in diameter, burst at 9:30pm due to slight land subsidence caused by heavy traffic on Jinshajiang Road, according to Shanghai Chengtou Group, the city’s major water operator.
The subsidence put downwards pressure on a 500-millimeter-wide gas pipe above it, which in turn caused the water pipe to burst, said the operator.
Water from the pipe flooded Jinshajiang Road and Zhongshan Road N, hampering traffic and forcing buses to take detours for about half an hour.
“The repair work took over a day because the water pipe was too close to the gas pipe,” said a spokesman.
