'Workers responsible for explosion'
NEGLIGENT workmen were responsible for a huge sterilizing unit exploding, injuring five people and damaging a Metro line 100 meters away, prosecutors yesterday claimed.
An unlicensed worker, surnamed Gong, and his supervisor, surnamed Yang, should bear direct responsibility for the accident at the Shanghai Jianhua Concrete Pile Co Ltd on November 7, 2010, said Songjiang District prosecutors. The pair have been charged with being responsible for serious accidents.
Gong didn't follow instructions for using the steam autoclave machine, said prosecutors, while Yang should have supervised better.
At 1:50 am, the autoclave head broke off and flew out of the factory at high speed.
The 2-ton piece of equipment smashed into a platform support on Line 9's elevated section, 100 meters north of the factory, severely damaging the support.
Five workers in the factory were injured, including two seriously hurt.
A date for the hearing has not yet been announced.
