Workplace fatalities down 2.6% this year
THE number of people killed in workplace accidents in the first five months fell 2.6 percent from the same period of last year to 413, the Shanghai Administration of Work Safety said yesterday.
Meanwhile, the number of accidents reported in the year dropped 24 percent to 3,485, authorities said in an announcement to mark national Work Safety Month.
The number of incidents featuring multiple fatalities fell to three in the period, from six a year earlier, while the associated death toll dropped to nine, from 21.
According to the administration, the decrease in the number of accidents was a result of better administration and the introduction of an updated list of 436 dangerous chemicals, classified as forbidden, restricted or controlled-use.
More stringent law enforcement also helped to keep numbers down, officials said. In the first four months of the year, fines totaling about 1 million yuan (US$160,251) were handed down to companies that breached work safety regulations.
In the same period, inspectors identified more than 67,000 potential problems at various workplaces, of which almost 63,000 have since been resolved.
