A forum on telecom scams was held in the city yesterday as part of a series on online safety to mark the third China Cybersecurity Week.
This year’s cybersecurity week forcused on telecom scams after several high profile cases happened nationwide.
A popular mobile phone security application company 360.com said at the forum its app blocked 3.43 billion unwanted calls around China in August.
About 13 percent of them were scam calls, touching 14.35 million calls a day on average.
It added more than about 43 percent of the scam calls were related to fake financial service.
As of the end of July, the city’s police had busted a total of 2,182 cases involving online scams or privacy infringement this year, and 3,975 suspects had been caught.
A professor of computer science from Fudan University, Yang Min, said the telecom scammers have now formed a sophisticated industry and is very hard to eliminate.
