Writer’s son sues for 10m yuan in royalties

THE son of a famous Chinese writer and teacher is suing Fudan University Press for 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million), claiming it published his father’s books for years without paying him royalties.

Yesterday, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said that it had accepted the case from Nan Xiaoshun, son of Nan Huai-Chin.

Nan Huai-Chin, who died in 2012, was a Buddhist master dedicated to promoting Chinese culture. His books include lectures on Confucius’ famous “Analects,” and works on Confucian scholar Mencius and Lao Tze, the founder of Taoism.

The copyright infringement case is also being brought against Taiwan’s Laoku Cultural Undertakings Co Ltd — which was founded by Nan Huai-Chin in 1977 — and Shanghai Book City’s Changning store.

Nan Xiaoshun claims that Fudan University Press reprinted the works of his father several times between 2009 and 2012, but paid the royalties to Laoku instead.
