Wujiaochang congestion to be eased

CONSTRUCTION of a new underpass in the busy Wujiaochang area in northern Shanghai will start before the end of this year, the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co said yesterday.

The underpass will bridge Songhu Road over its busy intersections with Zhengli Road and Sanmen Road and provide a fast passage from Songhu Road to Zhayin Road.

This project is expected to relieve the increasing traffic pressure on the business and commercial hub and facilitate traffic from and to the New Jiangwan Town in the north, which is a booming residential area.

The total length of the new road will be 2.3 kilometers, the company said, calling it the “south gate” of New Jiangwan Town. The company also said this will be a challenging project because part of the eastern branch of the underpass will be only 2 meters from Metro Line 10.
