Xuhui District cracks down on illegal group leasing of apartments

AUTHORITIES in Xuhui District have cracked down on 37 illegal group-leasing apartments in Jiahui Plaza, a residential complex.

Police found each of these apartments housing between 20 to 30 tenants in bunk beds. The monthly rent ranges from 500 (US$72.5) to 700 yuan (US$101.5).

Police officers, city management bureau and community office from Xujiahui sub-district destroyed 135 bunk beds today.

The majority of the tenants is from outside Shanghai and work in delivery business, dining venues, real estate agencies, housekeeping services and beauty salons in the neighborhood.

The apartments are crowded and posed safety issues. According to the property manager, the landlords illegally changed electrical cables and added dozens of sockets. Tenants were found littering outside that blocked passages. Some of them were even found sleeping in the corridors in summer.

Since last year, the neighborhood community office received 92 complaints about noise, littering and safety issues about these apartments.

“Local community office and the property management company have notified the landlords and told the tenants to move out but they are still here. Many of them keep coming back after we demolished the beds,” said Cheng Yibing, head of Xujiahui Community Office.

The property manager said they would step up security and report any violations to the local authorities.
