Yacht a good way to spend an afternoon

IF you’ve ever wondered how the other half lives, then a visit to the “2015 Yachting Shanghai — The International Marine Festival” is most definitely in order.
Starting on July 8, the five-day event promises to be a celebration of all things opulent, albeit with a hefty emphasis on the sort of expensive vessels the world’s super-rich favor for messing about on rivers, and sometimes oceans.
The event will be held at Houtan Park, the former World Expo site, which has been extensively redeveloped since completing its official duties five years ago.
For an entry fee of 160 yuan (US$26) per person, visitors will be able to wander around the dock area and view, and in some cases board, more than 40 boats.
Running alongside the outdoor events will be a number of seminars, presentations and exhibitions.
The former ferry port at Houtan Park has been redeveloped to create a yacht wharf with capacity for 100 vessels, Shen Bin, general manager of Shanghai Expo Houtan Source Industrial Co, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
The development is part of the city government’s plan to expand tourism facilities along the Huangpu River.
It is hoped the area will become a focal point for local people and tourists who want to learn more about yachting and other maritime activities, Shen said.
