Yang Xiong becomes city new mayor

Acting Mayor Yang Xiong has been officially appointed the mayor of Shanghai by lawmakers attending the current session of the Municipal People's Congress. He obtained the new title this morning.
Yang, 59, served as acting mayor since December. He was appointed vice mayor in 2003 and executive vice mayor in 2008. In the past four years, he was in charge of the city's development and reform, urban planning, population management, statistics, pricing and social stability.
During the World Expo in 2010, he served as executive deputy director of the Shanghai World Expo Executive Committee to oversee the construction of the Expo Site and Expo-related works.
After earning his Master's degree in economics in 1985 from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Yang worked as deputy director of the Economic Research Center under the municipal government.
Later, he served as the president and chairman of the board of Shanghai Airlines Co Ltd before he was appointed deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai government in February 2001.
