Year in jail for mother who abandoned baby

A 37-year-old woman was sentenced to a one-year jail term by Jing’an District People’s Court yesterday for abandoning her new-born daughter for three years.

The woman, surnamed Gao, is unmarried and delivered her child in a Jiading District hospital in February 2014. The baby, nicknamed Duoduo, was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Shanghai the following month due to perinatal asphyxia.

However, with Duoduo ready to be discharged, the hospital was unable to contact Gao, as she had changed her phone number and moved home.

The baby had to live in the hospital’s ward for newborns until May 12, 2016, when she was able to be placed in the city’s children’s temporary care center, an institution that looks after suspected abandoned babies.

According to the court, Gao never visited Duoduo or paid any medical or other expenses after giving birth. Police have been unable to locate the child’s father.

Jing’an District prosecutors tried to contact Gao’s family to see if they would take care of Duoduo, but Gao’s mother, who had remarried after divorcing Gao’s father, declined to do so. After multiple attempts to persuade Gao to look after her child, Gao was charged with abandonment on May 15.

The temporary care center is expected to apply to the court for Gao’s custody of her child to be revoked.

If the center does go to court, this is expected to be the first case in Shanghai whereby a civil affairs authority applies to a court to cancel a natural mother’s custody.
