You don’t want to kick the ball out in Jing’an

JING’AN is taking the football phrase “get it in the air, mate” literally.

The district is building a standard football field, 13 meters off the ground, on the roof of its new stadium.

The football stadium would only have 750 seats, so it would be more used as training base for local football teams or a sports facility for citizens, said Yu Biao, director of Jing’an Sports Bureau.

He added the district’s annual sports meeting was expected to be held there from next year.

Construction of the Jing’an stadium started about two years ago, and it was planned to be finished by March, at which time it would become the biggest sports facility in Jing’an, Yu said.

The new stadium is part and parcel of the district’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) to provide residents easy access to sports facilities.

The goal is to enable them to find gym equipment in their communities within a five-minute-walk from home, a gym club or school playground within a 10-minute walk, and comprehensive sports facilities, such as a stadium, within a 15-minute walk.

The football stadium, at 643 Yonghe Road E., will be close to the Middle Ring Road on the southeast — about a seven-minute walk from Wenshui Road Station on Metro Line 1.

Occupying a total of 61,733 square meters, equaling about eight and a half football pitches, the stadium will also have a swimming pool, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, four tennis courts, 16 table tennis courts and 20 badminton courts.

According to the stadium’s deputy director Shen Junwei, these sports are what residents, especially white-collar workers, want.

As the stadium was sited by residential buildings, construction materials that can absorb noise were being used, and the stadium would close by 9pm every day, Shen said.
