Young and restless seek divorce

DIVORCES among younger people jumped nearly 20 percent last year - even as the overall number of couples who split up declined.

More than 36,800 couples of all ages filed for divorce in the city in 2008, down 0.7 percent from 2007, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau reported yesterday. Among them, 17,412 people were under age 30.

Bureau officials said one of the problems was that many young people don't seem to be treating their marital vows seriously enough.

"We came across a case in Huangpu District where a woman got married five times and divorced four times during the past two years," said Zhou Jixiang, director of the bureau's marriage management division.

Zhou also said some young people rushed to tie the knot in August to join the "Olympic marriage tide."

"Many young couples regretted their decision and filed for divorce after several months," Zhou said.

More than 72 percent of the couples divorced because they said they were no longer in love.

Other reasons included tight finances, personality conflicts or the influence of a third person.

The bureau's figures also showed an upswing in the number of men from other provinces who married Shanghai women.

During the 1990s, about 90 percent of the outsiders who found a Shanghai partner were women.

"They usually married Shanghai men who were having a hard time finding a local wife," Zhou said. "Last year, 30 percent were men, with high educational backgrounds."

More than 138,000 couples wed last year, a rise of nearly 18 percent from 2007.

Shanghai men who married for the first time last year were 28.5 years old on average, while women averaged 25.9, a bit younger than in 2007, officials said.

The bureau also said it is now inspecting local matchmaking companies to make sure they're not dealing with foreigners.

"According to local law, matchmaking involving foreigners is not allowed," Zhou said. "We're reminding expats that companies may cheat them when introducing possible mates."
