Young couple sold baby for 50,000 yuan
A young couple who sold their newborn daughter for 50,000 yuan (US$8,205) as they could not afford to care for her financially but used part of the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone was charged with human trafficking, Yangpu District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The unemployed couple, who could not be named for legal reasons, can legally have two children as they are both the only child in their families.
They, however, already have two children born in 2004 and 2005. When the wife gave birth to the baby girl this year, the couple decided to put up the girl for adoption online.
The wife said she placed the adoption posting on Baidu Post Bar, a well-known online community, hoping for a wealthy couple to adopt the child.
She said she couldn’t afford the child’s living costs because her family was very poor.
The couple would provide details via the QQ online messaging tool when potential customers showed interest before meeting them later.
They were satisfied with one customer’s background and handed the child over in exchange for 50,000 yuan.
The couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford.
“Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees,” they said.
However, the couple used the 50,000 yuan to buy iPhones, expensive shoes and other costly products on the Internet, according to prosecutors.
