Young suspects nabbed for theft
EIGHT suspects between the ages of 14 and 17 who stole more than 500,000 yuan (US$80,000) worth of goods in Baoshan District have been caught, Shanghai police said yesterday.
They are suspected of being involved in 86 cases of thefts since January in Yuepu Town, police said.
The underage suspects have reportedly stolen a number of mopeds. They also stole money and other valuables from cars after smashing the car windows.
All of them were caught by February 2.
They told police that they got acquainted with each other from an online game community and gave “stealing assignments” to each other over the internet.
Police said the suspects are all children of migrants. Some of them had committed similar offenses before but were acquitted because of their age.
According to Chinese criminal laws, juvenile offenders under 16 years of age cannot be held for stealing.
