Zhangjiang illegal structures torn down
AUTHORITIES in Pudong New Area’s Zhangjiang Town began demolishing about 160,000 square meters of illegal construction yesterday, local authorities said.
The latest crackdown follows the destruction of 620,000 square meters of illegal construction already so far this year, local officials said, adding illicit expansion had impacted adversely on the Handang Industrial Park.
The area is also the site of the planned Zhangjiang Science City.
The latest demolitions involve structures put up by four companies. Two agreed to pull buildings down or work with the government to do so and the other two were subject to forced demolition by the authorities, officials said.
There are 18 enterprises in the Handang Industrial Park, which covers about 80,000 square meters. According to the local government, some buildings had been subleased more than once after the original leasing contract expired in 2012.
Due to bad management and illegal expansion, the industrial park had been hit by a polluted environment and other dangers, which also affected residents in the area.
