Zhongshan Park to get makeover

THE Zhongshan Park area of Changning District is to be transformed into a leisure and commercial hot spot under a major redevelopment program, a top official said yesterday.

On completion of the scheme, the park will be the focal park of a new “tourist attraction, where people will be able to spend whole days shopping, sightseeing and enjoying the surroundings,” Wang Weiren, Party secretary of Changning, said during an interview broadcast on local radio.

The park itself will become an “open green space,” without walls or gates, so that local people can enjoy it 24 hours a day, he said.

While the interview was light on details and timescales, Wang said that the development will include major improvements to the infrastructure for pedestrian access.

That comment was made after a listener rang the show to complain about the speed at which the lights change on the pedestrian crossing on Changning Road. Elderly people, in particular, find it difficult to cross the busy street in the time allotted, the person said.

Wang said that a number of solutions are being considered, including both underground and elevated walkways.

As well as the changes to the park, a major addition to the neighborhood will be a shopping mall, the official said, adding that the authorities are also considering the construction of an underground car park to cater to visitors.

A 1,000-seat theater and a music theme park are also in the offing, he said.
