Zongzi company wins suit

A food manufacturing giant in the city was ordered to pay compensation of 500,000 yuan to a well-known food company and apologize in the local media for trademark infringement, a local court ruled yesterday.

The Zhejiang Wufangzhai Group, which is famous for producing a Chinese traditional food, zongzi, accused the Shanghai Xinghualou (Group) Co of using a similar brand name to also sell zongzi.

The Zhejiang company said in court that Wufangzhai zongzi has been widely recognized by Chinese consumers and the brand was registered long before, but the zongzi produced by Xing-hualou was labeled with a similar name. They said they believed Xinghualou had made use of the influence of the famous brand to promote its sales.

Xinghualou unsuccessfully argued that its zongzi products were named Shanghai Wufangzhai, and Shanghai Wufangzhai was set up before the Zhejiang company.
