City leaders meet International Skating Union chief

SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng and Mayor Yang Xiong met Ottavio Cinquanta, president of the International Skating Union over the weekend.
Han said that more and more Chinese become interested in ice sports thanks to the country’s opening over the past 30 years and more skating events have stricken roots in China.
He thanked the International Skating Union for letting Shanghai host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships this year and said he believed that the event will make more Chinese fall in love with skating and participate more in winter sports.
Shanghai will do its best to organize the championships and make it a successful and splendid event, Han added.
Cinquanta said the International Skating Union felt honored to cooperate with Shanghai in holding the championships.
Figure skating is the most watched and complicated form of winter sports. China has many outstanding figure skaters who achieved good results in international competitions, he said, adding that he was looking forward to seeing outstanding performances during the event and hoped more and more Chinese will participate in skating.
In a separate meeting with Cinquanta, Mayor Yang Xiong thanked the ISU for giving support to Shanghai and said the city is honored to play host to the championships.
Yang said the municipal government made the event organization a top priority and pledged to make it a successful, splendid and unforgettable competition.
He said Shanghai also hosts the Formula One China Grand Prix and ATP Masters Tournament every year. Both are popular among Shanghai people. Skating is also a popular sports activity among locals. The city’s hosting of the championships will help promote the sport in Shanghai and surrounding areas. Shanghai will take the event as an opportunity to improve skating training and host more ice events.
Cinquanta thanked Shanghai for making careful preparations for the championships and said he believed the competition will be hugely successful and further enhance China and Shanghai’s influence on international figure skating circles.
Vice Mayor Zhao Wen joined both meetings.
