SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng welcomed German President Joachim Gauck and his delegation yesterday and repeated Chinese President Xi Jinping’s words that the two countries are seeing closer exchanges and cooperation than ever before.
Han said Shanghai has strong ties with Germany in areas of economy, trade, science and technology, culture and people-to-people exchange. Shanghai and Hamburg have been sister cities for 30 years. Many German companies operate well in Shanghai.
He said he believed Gauck’s visit will help strengthen Sino-German cooperation in all areas.
Han also reviewed Shanghai’s development and opening in the past two decades. The city’s landscape has changed enormously and local people are living a much better life. But, he said China still has 70 million people living under the poverty line, mostly in the western region. Shanghai has the obligation to support the country’s effort to lift the 70 million people out of poverty.
Gauck said Shanghai is well known in Germany and the city stands for opening and innovation. He is glad the long-term cooperation between Hamburg and Shanghai has borne fruit and there are more than 10,000 Germans working, studying and living in Shanghai.
The president said the Sino-German friendship needs careful maintenance. He hoped both sides can increase cooperation in science and technology and in culture. Germany is willing to share its experiences in economic development, social security and technology innovation with China.
Chinese Ambassador to Germany Shi Mingde and Shanghai Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao also joined the meeting.
