Han Zheng meets new Canadian ambassador
促进上海与加拿大各地友好关系 韩正会见加拿大新任驻华大使麦家廉一行

SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng received Canada’s new ambassador to China John McCallum on Monday.

He said the two nations’ leaders exchanged visits regularly in recent years. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau all agreed to deepen ties between the two countries.

Han noted that Shanghai has been the sister city of the ambassador’s hometown, Montreal, for over 30 years. Shanghai has extensive cooperation with the Canadian city and many Canadian companies are operating well in Shanghai.

The Party chief said Shanghai is an open port and is developing the pilot free trade zone in Pudong according to the plan of the central government. The free trade zone is a testimony of China’s determination to open wider to the world.

He said he hoped the ambassador will have a better understanding of Shanghai and China on this trip and help promote ties between the two nations and between Shanghai and Canadian cities.

McCallum said he wants to contribute to Sino-Canadian friendship and further promote bilateral cooperation in trade, transport, education, tourism, health care and environmental protection.
