Han Zheng stresses innovation in visit to NYU Shanghai
韩正:希望上海纽约大学在办学创新上走在前列

Shanghai Party Secretary Han Zheng made a field study in NYU Shanghai’s Lujiazui Campus on September 1 to learn the development of the Sino-American joint university.
When talking with representatives of its faculty, Han hoped that the university can build itself into a world-class research university, always be the frontrunner of education innovations and train more innovative talents with international perspectives.
He promised to create a better environment for innovative talents.
NYU Shanghai’s Lujiazui Campus is China’s first university to comprise only a single building, known as vertical campus without walls. All its facilities are designed to meet the demands of students’ activities and education. All technical applications provide great convenience for real-time connection and interaction between the university and New York University’s global education network. Each floor of the building has enough public spaces for teachers and students to interact and communicate.
Han and city leaders Yin Hong and Weng Tiehui visited the students’ health center, career guide center, academic resource center and library and talked with teachers and students to learn about their work, study and life .
After hearing the reports by from NYU Shanghai Chancellor Yu Lizhong and Vice Chancellor Jeffrey S. Lehman, Han congratulated on the university’s preliminary achievements and thanked its management team.
Han said that NYU Shanghai is co-founded by two renowned universities of China and the United States, which is an innovative cooperation model and will continue to receive close attention and full support from the CPC Shanghai Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Government.
In China, many children have potential in innovation and the most important task and responsibility for universities are to cultivate them to be real innovative talents with international perspectives, Han said.
NYU Shanghai is jointly founded by East China Normal University and New York University in the United States.
The university’s faculty includes academicians from American National Academy of Sciences and Academy of Arts and Sciences. About 600 undergraduates and more than 150 students from New York University are now studying in the campus.
