Han Zheng talks with Standard Chartered chairman
韩正会见英国渣打集团主席庄贝思爵士一行

IN his meeting with Standard Chartered chairman Sir John Peace last Thursday, Shanghai Party Secretary Han Zheng said the Shanghai Free Trade Zone is a major step in China’s effort to deepen reforms and increase opening.

The Shanghai government has set high goals in the city’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) and Shanghai will meet the expectations of the central government to develop into an international financial center and to carry out bold financial reforms, Han said.

The local Party leader said Standard Chartered has witnessed and participated in Shanghai’s endeavor to build an international financial center. Shanghai and the Standard Chartered Bank should cooperate more closely in financial reforms.

He said Shanghai will continue to improve business environment for banks and other enterprises to help them develop faster in Shanghai.

Sir John Peace said the Standard Chartered has a very long history in Shanghai, which represents the core part of its China business. The country’s economic achievements and Shanghai’s role in China’s reform are impressive. His bank will contribute more to Shanghai’s efforts to become an international financial center and to the development of Shanghai FTZ.

Founded in 1853, Standard Chartered has more than 1,200 branches in 71 countries and regions. Standard Chartered China is one of the first foreign banks to conduct cross-border yuan settlement and the first commercial bank to open yuan accounts for overseas companies.
