Han Zheng welcomes Indian PM Modi

SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng met with visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and welcomed his visit on behalf of 24 million Shanghai people.
Han said Shanghai has a special relationship with India. When Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India last year, he and Modi witnessed the signing of an agreement between Shanghai and Mumbai to become sister cities.
Han said many Indian nationals are working and living in Shanghai and the city also has close economic and trade ties with other cities in India.
The Shanghai Party chief said what the Prime Minister saw here is a result of over 30 years of reform and opening. Shanghai is continuing to tackle problems that arise from changes.
He said China and India are the largest developing countries in the world. Increased trade and cooperation between the two nations will benefit 2.5 billion people and contribute to the global economy.
Modi expressed greetings to Shanghai people on behalf of 1.2 billion Indians. He said that enhanced cooperation between the two nations is in the interest of both peoples and will benefit other countries in the world.
The Indian PM said Shanghai’s achievement exemplifies how urbanization can promote social progress and prosperity. It is a model and inspiration for other developing countries in the world.
He said Shanghai has attracted people all over the world to work and live in the city, including Indians. The knowledge and experiences they learned here will help promote development in India.
Modi said he hoped the first India-China Forum of Regional Leaders can lead to more exchanges and cooperation between regional governments in both countries.
Chinese Minister of Human Resources and Social Security Yin Weimin, Chinese Ambassador to India Le Yucheng and Shanghai Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao were present at the meeting.
