SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Mitch Barns, chief executive officer of The Nielsen Company, and his group on Monday.

Yang said that information data is crucial for decision making whether by governments or corporations. Cloud computing and big data technologies are becoming more and more important.

He said Shanghai is developing into an international center of finance and trade and is already the largest port and goods distribution center in China. The city handles a massive amount of data.

The Shanghai government is pooling information of various departments and agencies and will open its database to the public, he added.

The mayor welcomed The Nielson and other data processing and analysis companies to cooperate with the Shanghai government and local enterprises in data management and exploration to serve the city’s economic and social development. He said Shanghai will create better environment for the big data industry.

Barns said The Nielson Company is keen to share its expertise with relevant departments and companies in Shanghai and to help them adopt big data technologies.

The Nielson is a world-renowned data research and market survey company and ranked 380th among the Fortune 500 companies last year.
