MAYOR Yang Xiong met a group of foreign consul-generals in Shanghai yesterday and briefed them on the city’s economic and social development as well as the operation of Shanghai Free Trade Zone.

Yang said Shanghai worked hard this year to stabilize economic growth, carry out reform and industrial restructuring, and improve people’s livelihood. The hard work is bearing positive results. He said the city can fulfill its development target set early this year.

He told the diplomats that the Shanghai FTZ has proven successful by adopting new policies that are in line with international practices, such as the negative list for investment, financial system innovation, and administrative reform.

The mayor answered the diplomats’ questions about “green transportation” and said it is a daunting task for a big city like Shanghai to ensure efficient transport and to contain air pollution at the same time. Shanghai is building a multi-tier public transport network of subways and buses.

He said Shanghai’s Metro lines will total 800 kilometers by 2020 and the government is offering subsidies for new energy vehicles and building more electric trams in suburban towns.

The mayor pledged more efforts to deepen reforms and to increase market opening, adding that Shanghai will cooperate more with foreign companies, universities and think tanks to tackle problems in its development.

He also discussed topics of economic trends, public services, and international exchanges with foreign consul-generals.
