Mayor meets Fijian president

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Fijian President H.E. Epeli Nailatikau on August 18 and extended his warm welcome to the president on behalf of the Shanghai Municipal Government and all the citizens.
Yang thanked Fiji for its full support to the World Expo 2010 Shanghai under the leadership of President Nailatikau and congratulated the opening of Fiji’s consulate general in Shanghai.
Fiji’s participation in World Expo 2010 has not only enabled Shanghai residents to have a better understanding of this island country but also promoted the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides. And the president’s visit will surely enhance the friendship and cooperation of Shanghai and Fiji, Yang continued.
Yang said that he is pleased to witness the establishment of Fijian consulate general in the city, which will be another channel for Shanghai’s cooperation with Fiji and other Pacific island countries.
Yang continued that Fiji, which has beautiful scenery and abundant tourism and fishing resources, is attracting an increasing number of Shanghai tourists. Yang added that Shanghai is willing to work with Fiji in tourism, agriculture and fishery for win-win development.
Nailatikau talked about his previous visits to Shanghai and praised the Expo 2010 Shanghai for its marvelous surprise to the world.
Nailatikau continued that Fiji’s opening a consulate general in Shanghai is a key step to further expand its friendly ties with Shanghai and the new consulate will play an important role in promoting the friendly exchanges and corporation between Shanghai and Fiji as well as Pacific island countries.
Fijian Consul General in Shanghai Neumi Leweni also joined the meeting.
Nailatikau also attended the opening ceremony of the consulate general in Shanghai along with Jin Xingming, deputy secretary general of the Shanghai Municipal Government on the afternoon of August 18.
Shanghai has had 74 consulates by now.
