Mayor meets Merck boss Karl-Ludwig Kley

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Karl-Ludwig Kley, chairman and CEO of Merck Group, on Wednesday.

Yang praised the German pharmaceutical company for continued investment in Shanghai, saying its focus on research and development in medicine, life science and high-performance chemicals is in line with Shanghai’s effort to become an innovation center. There is a huge potential for more cooperation.

He said Shanghai is speeding up its transformation into a global innovation center and will build a number of advanced research facilities. The city already boasts a synchrotron radiation facility and the National Protein Science Center.

The mayor said Shanghai’s achievements were made through the joint efforts of domestic and foreign companies and research institutions. The city welcomes multinationals like Merck to cooperate with local companies and develop business in China.

Karl-Ludwig Kley said Shanghai made remarkable achievements in the past 30 years. Merck is glad to play a part in the city’s development. He reaffirmed continued investment in Shanghai and said Merck wants to cooperate with tech start-ups and help local companies to grow better.

Merck has about 50,000 employees worldwide. Its investment in China goes back to the 1930s. Shanghai is its primary market in China.
