SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Barbara Woodward, Britain’s Ambassador to China and her group last Thursday. He welcomed the ambassador’s visit to Shanghai after taking the position.
Yang said Shanghai has long and friendly ties with the UK. It has cooperated fruitfully with the City of London, or the London Financial District, and has become sister city of Liverpool and Greater London.
The mayor said Shanghai is keen to deepen cooperation with the UK, based on the consensus reached by the two countries’ leaders. The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone is carrying out reform and innovation to facilitate investment and trade and open up its financial sector. Its successful experiences will be copied nationwide.
He welcomed British companies to participate in the development of the free trade zone and help Shanghai to become an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping as well as a global innovation center.
Woodward spoke highly of Shanghai’s vitality and creativity, saying the 2015 UK-China Year of Cultural Exchange is a good opportunity to boost bilateral exchanges. The UK pays close attention to the Shanghai FTZ and British companies are encouraged to join the zone’s development, she added.
The ambassador said she hoped the UK and Shanghai can strengthen cooperation in finance, creative industries, health care, environmental protection and education.
