Mayor meets UN vice secretary-general

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Joan Clos, executive director of UN-Habitat and vice secretary-general of UN on Wednesday.

Yang said that the World Cities Day has been observed for three years as a legacy of Expo 2010 Shanghai and with the help of UN-Habitat, International Exhibitions Bureau and Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Shanghai has been in smooth progress to compile Shanghai Manual, which is meant to offer case references and detailed suggestions to the development of different types of cities.

This manual is expected to be published at this year’s UN Housing and Sustainable Urban Development Conference, the mayor said.

Yang believed that the manual will play a positive role in the world, particularly in developing countries. Shanghai is keen to deepen cooperation with UN-Habitat to set up periodic renewal mechanism for the manual to share successful cases and practices to benefit more countries and cities in global urbanization.

Clos said that the UN-Habitat is cooperating with Shanghai soundly and World Cities Day activities have been effective. The editing and revision of the manual has gone smoothly.

He added that successful cases and experiences in Chinese urbanization including Shanghai’s successful practices will offer the world cities beneficiary enlightenments. UN-Habitat will continue to deepen cooperation with Shanghai to achieve more fruits.

Shanghai Vice Mayor Jiang Zhuoqing was present at the meeting.
