Mayor meets business leaders ahead of advisory council meeting

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Orit Gadiesh, chairwoman of Bain & Company and the outgoing chair of the International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai, on November 1.

Other council members also joined the meeting, including senior executives of Luksic Group, Chia Tai Group, Mitsubishi Corporation, Evonik Industries AG, Starr Group, ABB, Suez Environment Company, GDF Suez, and Novartis AG.

Yang welcomed the guests to this year’s council meeting and said the advisory council has played an important role in Shanghai’s reform and development over the past 25 years.

The mayor said the theme of this year’s council meeting was about the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone where China is experimenting with new policies to deepen reform and widen market opening.

Shanghai is trying to facilitate investment and trade through administrative and financial reforms and is introducing international practices to create a better business environment for foreign companies operating in the free trade zone, Yang said.

He noted that the Shanghai FTZ has operated smoothly for one year and has achieved results. Its good practices and experiences will be copied nationwide.

Yang said he hoped the council members will offer their wisdom and advices to Shanghai at the council meeting and help Shanghai to become an international center of economy, trade, finance and shipping and a global innovation center.

The council members said they are impressed by Shanghai FTZ’s achievements in the past year and made suggestions concerning their respective industries. They said the FTZ is essential to China’s reform and opening and they are eager to participate in the construction of Shanghai FTZ for mutual benefits.
