Mayor meets visiting Portuguese prime minister

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met the visiting Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa and his delegation on Monday.
Yang said that Shanghai and Portugal have sound cooperation ties and Shanghai became sister city of Porto Municipality as early as 1995. World Expo Shanghai 2010 also learned from Lisbon World Expo during preparation.
The mayor said that Shanghai residents love Portuguese food and soccer teams and Shanghai and Portugal have great cooperation potential as the city and the Iberian country’s economic and trade ties continue to develop.
Yang believed that the prime minister’s visit will further improve mutual understandings and promote cooperation between the two sides in all fields.
He promised that the Shanghai government will strive to build a better business environment for all companies in the world as Shanghai is carrying out reforms in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.
He pledged that the local government will encourage Chinese companies including Shanghai companies to invest in foreign countries including Portugal through the portal of the pilot zone in the city.
China’s “One Belt, One Road” strategy is a big opportunity for China to cooperate with Portugal. Shanghai is actively participating in the strategy and keen to play an even greater role in promoting Chinese-Portuguese ties as well as cooperation between China and Portuguese countries, the mayor added.
Costa said that it is his fourth visit to Shanghai and he is impressed by the dynamic city’s development.
The Portuguese government put China’s “One Belt, One Road” strategy as top priority and hoped that the two countries can further enhance cooperation under this framework to enable Portugal to be a connection between China and Europe, Africa and South America, the prime minister said.
He added that Porto and Shanghai’s sister city ties has created a sound foundation for Shanghai and Portugal to enhance cooperation and Portugal hoped to expand cooperation with Shanghai in fields such as ports and food trade.
The prime minster welcomed more Shanghai companies to invest in Portugal.
