SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Swiss Ambassador to China, Jean-Jacques de Dardel, on Monday. He said China and Switzerland have enjoyed friendly relationship since they established diplomatic ties 64 years ago.

Yang noted that Shanghai is a sister city of Basel, a major city in Switzerland and the two cities have cooperated fruitfully in areas of banking, pharmaceutical, tourism and cultural sectors.

The mayor said Shanghai is an open city. The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone is a testing ground of China’s new reform and opening policies. The zone is conducting administrative and financial innovations, which offers a lot of opportunities for cooperation between Shanghai and Switzerland.

Yang said Shanghai is striving to become a global innovation center and hopes to cooperate with Swiss universities, research institutes, and enterprises. The ambassador’s visit will boost bilateral trade, cultural exchanges, and cooperation in science and environmental protection.

Jean-Jacques de Dardel said he was impressed by Shanghai’s development. Many Swiss companies are interested in the Shanghai FTZ and are looking for business and investment opportunities there.

He said the two countries will celebrate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship next year. He hoped Switzerland and Shanghai can expand their cooperation for mutual benefits.

Alexander Hoffet, Swiss consul general in Shanghai, joined the meeting.
