Mayor talks on further cooperation with Finland guests

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Espoo City Manager Jukka Mäkelä and his delegation last week.
Yang said that this year is the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Finland and Espoo have made development in fields such as science and technology innovation as well as cultural exchanges.
Yang continued that Shanghai is following the Chinese central government’s strategies to become a global innovation center and Shanghai has released 22 guidelines to speed up the efforts.
Yang also said that Shanghai will build a national science center at Zhangjiang National Innovation Demonstration Zone and accelerate to attract key science infrastructures.
Yang added that Shanghai now has more than 100 hackerspaces to help young people to start their businesses and pursue their dreams, which require cooperation between startups and all types of innovative institutions of the two cities. Yang expected Finchi Innovation Center to play a greater role in such cooperation.
Yang hoped that the two cities can further enhance cooperation in fields such as education, culture, medicine and health and innovation fields when the two sides renew their cooperation agreements next year.
Mäkelä said that he has visited the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone during his stay in Shanghai and hoped to use this as a platform to further expand economic and trade ties between Espoo and Shanghai.
Mäkelä added that being sister cities for more than 10 years, Espoo and Shanghai can expand cooperation at different levels and business starting conference and other activities can be hosted particularly to attract startups and young people from both cities.
Jan Wahlberg, Finland’s consul general to Shanghai also joined the meeting.
