SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng met a delegation from the China-Britain Business Council led by its chairman Lord James Sassoon last week.
Han said Shanghai is continuing with reforms and opening and hopes to attain the goal of becoming an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping in 2020 and a modern metropolis with socialist characteristics.
He said Shanghai is stepping up the effort to liberalize the yuan through innovation and opening. The city’s financial and shipping sectors are main areas for cooperation between China and Britain.
The Party boss noted that Shanghai is the sister city of Liverpool and London. Many British companies are operating in Shanghai and contributed to the development of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. Many Shanghai enterprises also invested in Britain.
He pledged that Shanghai as the economic center of China will continue to promote trade and economic cooperation with Britain.
Sassoon congratulated Shanghai for becoming an international financial center and he hoped his council and the city of Shanghai can increase cooperation in financial and shipping industries.
Li Xiaolin, chairwoman of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, was present at the meeting.
Founded in 1954, the CBBC is dedicated to developing economic and trade ties between China and Britain. It has about 1,000 corporate members in financial, shipping, consulting and education sectors. About 45 percent of them are multinational companies based in Britain.
