SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng and Mayor Yang Xiong had a meeting with Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun Ying last Thursday. Leung came to attend the Hong Kong/Shanghai Economic and Trade Co-operation Conference.
Han said the conference has been held twice since 2003 in Shanghai and Hong Kong. It helped to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between the two cities. Preparation for the third conference began in March 2014 and he hoped the conference would boost the two cities’ economic and trade ties.
Many people in Shanghai and Hong Kong pay close attention to each other’s development. Now the focus is on the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone which has been expanded by absorbing special development zones in Pudong, Han added.
Leung said Shanghai and Hong Kong have great potentials for cooperation. The Hong Kong SAR government attaches great importance to the Shanghai-Hong Kong cooperation conference.
Leung said the Shanghai FTZ has expanded and more free trade zones have been established in Guangdong, Tianjin and Fujian. This testifies the success of the Shanghai FTZ. The timing for the third conference is perfect.
He noted that Shanghai and Hong Kong will launch 20 more economic and trade cooperation policies to strengthen ties between the two cities and their people. The cooperation is win-win for both cities and for the whole country.
Zhou Bo, deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council, Shanghai officials Tu Guangshao and Yin Hong, and Hong Kong SAR Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah joined the meeting.
