SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng met Yoo Il Ho, South Korean deputy prime minister and minister of strategy and finance, last month.

Han said China and South Korea have enjoyed good relationship and growing trade since the two countries established diplomatic ties 24 years ago. Shanghai and Busan became sister cities in 1993 and cooperated in many fields such as science and technology and culture.

He said he hoped Yoo's visit will give him a better understanding of China and Shanghai's economic and social development and will help promote Sino-Korean friendship and ties between Korean cities and Shanghai.

Han told Yoo that 2016 is the starting year of China's 13th Five-Year Plan. Shanghai is accelerating its transformation into an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping. As a mega city, Shanghai also faces challenges caused by a big population, such as runaway housing prices. Authorities are keeping a close watch at the real estate market and will try to meet the need of local homebuyers.

Yoo said the ROK-China relationship has developed well over the past 24 years and he was impressed by Shanghai's economic development. He thanked Shanghai for preserving the former building of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea and for building a memorial for Yun Bong-gil, a Korea independence fighter who killed senior Japanese army officers with a bomb attack in a local park in 1932.

Yoo said that more than 2,000 South Korean companies are operating in Shanghai. He hoped the city would take measures to make Korean won freely convertible into the yuan, adding that the two countries should expand cooperation into more areas.

Shanghai Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao was present at the meeting.
