SHANGHAI Party Secretary Han Zheng told California Institute of Technology President Thomas F. Rosenbaum that Shanghai is gearing up efforts to become a global innovation center. “Talent is key to this process,” he said in a meeting last Saturday.

Shanghai needs topnotch professionals for various industries as it strives to raise the quality of its population for sustainable development, the Party chief said.

Han emphasized the role of education in shaping the future, saying Shanghai is carrying out comprehensive reform in education in a bid to produce more talented and creative minds.

He said Caltech is one of the world’s most prestigious universities and has cooperated well with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in undergraduate education and some research projects. The two universities should work more closely in talent development programs.

Rosenbaum said Shanghai has made remarkable achievements and become the focus of global attention. The city’s talent strategy has played a key role behind its achievements.

He said Caltech’s cooperation with Shanghai Jiao Tong University has paid off. The two schools can expand cooperation further and make bigger contribution to the city’s talent development program.
