Shanghai and Taipei mayors talk closer ties

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met his Taipei counterpart Ko Wen-je and his delegation yesterday and welcomed them to attend this year's Shanghai-Taipei Forum.

Yang said the two cities have enjoyed long-term cooperation and exchanges which culminated in the annual forum and a series of agreements to strengthen exchanges in science and technology, education, culture, sports and public health.

He said the Shanghai-Taipei relationship set a good example for other cities across the straits and promoted friendship between people on both sides of the straits.

Yang said Shanghai is building itself into an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping and is facilitating trade and investment in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone through reforms and opening and financial innovation. The city is also striving to become a global innovation center.

The mayor said Shanghai's development has provided new opportunities for cooperation with Taipei and he welcomed young professionals from Taipei to start businesses in Shanghai.

Ko thanked the Shanghai government for organizing the forum and said the forum has become a good platform for the two cities to learn from each other and improve their ties.

The Taipei mayor said that people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are one family. Taipei is keen to promote people-to-people exchanges, build mutual trust and contribute to the peace and mutual prosperity of people on both sides of the straits.

Shanghai Vice Mayor Weng Tiehui joined the meeting.
