Shanghai delegation completes Singapore visit

A Shanghai government delegation led by Mayor Yang Xiong visited Singapore from May 12 to 14. In his meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Yang expressed condolences to the passing of Singapore's founding father, Lee Kuan Yew.

Yang said both Lee Kuan Yew and his son Lee Hsien Loong are old friends of Shanghai people. The two cities achieved fruitful cooperation in economy, trade, transport, health care and education.

The mayor said Singapore is advanced in banking, trade, science and technology, and urban management. Its experiences are worth learning as Shanghai is pursuing innovation-driven economic growth.

He said Shanghai wants to contribute to China-Singapore relations and carry out “One Belt, One Road” initiatives for mutual benefits of the two countries.

Lee said Shanghai is the most open city in China with broad links to the world. Shanghai is increasingly important in Singapore-China relationship.

He noted that the two countries not only have strong economic and trade ties, but also frequent exchanges between their peoples. He pays close attention to Shanghai’s development, its efforts to become an international financial center, and the construction of Shanghai Free Trade Zone.

Yang also had a meeting with Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, and they oversaw the signing of four agreements between Shanghai Commerce Commission and International Enterprise Singapore, between Lujiazui Group and Raffles Medical Group Ltd, between China Vanke Co and Etonhouse International Education Group Singapore, and between CBN TV and MyChina Channel Singapore.

Addressing a CBN-hosted forum on Shanghai-Singapore trade ties, Yang said Shanghai wants to use innovation to create more business cooperation opportunities. He also attended a roundtable on innovation with Singaporean business leaders, scholars and government officials.

The Shanghai delegation also visited One North, a science and technology hub, and Raffles Hospital to learn about the health system in Singapore. They also observed how Singaporean parliament members receive their constituents and solve problems in their communities.

The delegation toured a subway construction site and talked to workers from Shanghai Urban Construction Municipal Engineering Group, the contractor of the subway project.
