Shanghai delegation visits Istanbul, Ankara
杨雄率上海市政府代表团访问土耳其友好城市

A Shanghai official delegation led by Mayor Yang Xiong visited Turkish cities of Istanbul and Ankara from May 7 to 11. Both are sister cities of Shanghai.

Shanghai officials visited Boğaziçi University on May 8 and oversaw the signing of an agreement between Shanghai University and Boğaziçi University to build a Turkey center.

Yang told Boğaziçi University President Gülay Barbarosoğlu that Shanghai will grab opportunities arising from “One Belt, One Road” initiatives to increase bilateral cooperation in education, culture, science and technology.

Turkish students learning the Chinese language at the Confucius Institute in Boğaziçi University presented a Chinese performance for Yang and his delegation.

Later, the Shanghai delegation attended an economic and trade forum with Turkish businesspeople and witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Shanghai Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export and the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board.

On the same day, Yang met his Istanbul counterpart, Kadir Topbaş. Yang said Shanghai and Istanbul have been sister cities for 25 years and they should continue to build friendly ties and cooperate in trade, culture, tourism and urban construction. The two cities can play an active role in “One Belt, One Road” initiative.

Topbaş said Shanghai’s urban development is impressive and its experiences are worth learning. Istanbul is keen to strengthen cooperation with Shanghai in various fields.

On May 10, Yang and China Power Investment Corporation general manager Lu Qizhou oversaw the signing of a contract between Shanghai Electric Group and a Turkish power company. The Shanghai company will provide equipment to a coal-fired power plant in Turkey. Yang also witnessed a Turkish mining company inking a deal to set up its Asian logistic center in Shanghai.

On May 11, Yang met Turkish Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Fikri Işık. Yang said Shanghai will utilize its advantages to promote Sino-Turkish cooperation in manufacturing and high-tech industries. Fikri Işık said he will support the bilateral cooperation in industries.

Yang also met Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek and they signed an agreement for cooperation from 2015 to 2017. Yang said Shanghai and Ankara can take advantage of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative to expand cooperation in economy, trade, culture and tourism.

Gökçek said he is keen to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two sister cities.

Chinese Ambassador to Turkey Yu Hongyang and Chinese Consul General in Istanbul Ding Xiaohong attended some of the events.
