Shanghai mayor welcomes visiting French PM

MAYOR Yang Xiong met visiting French Prime Minister  Manuel Valls and his delegation last Saturday. He said the Sino-French relationship is growing well and Shanghai has extensive cooperation with France in many areas.

The mayor said Shanghai is the sister city of Rhône-Alpes Administrative Region and Marseilles. They enjoyed fruitful cooperation in many fields. The France Pavilion and Rhône-Alpes Pavilion at World Expo Shanghai 2010 have reopened to let the Chinese people understand the French culture. He said the prime minister’s visit will boost bilateral exchanges in trade, science and technology, and culture.

Yang said the Shanghai Free Trade Zone has operated for more than one year and achieved successful results in reform and opening, which made it more convenient for foreign companies to invest and do trade in the city.

He encouraged more French companies to invest in Shanghai and more Shanghai companies to invest in France, particularly in the fields of education, finance, science and technology, transportation, and health care.

Valls said Shanghai has attracted many French enterprises and is one of the cities in Asia with a large French community.

He said the French government has relaxed its visa policy for Chinese citizens, the French and the Chinese can visit each other’s country more frequently.

Valls welcomed more Chinese students to study in France, more Chinese companies to invest in France and more Chinese tourists to travel in France. He promised to improve business and travel environment for them.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, French Ambassador to China Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, and Chinese Ambassador to France Zhai Jun joined the meeting.
