Yang Xiong meets Canadian foreign minister
自贸区蕴藏很多机遇 杨雄会见加拿大外长贝尔德

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met with visiting Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird on Monday. Baird came from Beijing after attending the APEC Ministerial Meeting there.

Yang said the two countries’ economic and trade ties developed well. Shanghai has extensive cooperation and exchanges with Canada, particularly with its sister cities of Montreal and Quebec.

He said Shanghai and Canada should expand cooperation in education, health and new energy while continuing to strengthen trade, financial and cultural exchanges.

The mayor said the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone operated smoothly for more than a year. Shanghai is taking innovative approaches to improve government supervision of investment, trade and financial services. The city is striving to become an international financial center.

The construction of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone presents many opportunities. Canadian companies should invest in the zone and seize the opportunities there, Yang said.

Baird praised Shanghai for being a dynamic world-class metropolis and said Canada and Shanghai have huge potentials for cooperation in trade, finance and culture. The two economies are highly complementary.

He added that both sides can benefit from financial innovations in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and the offshore yuan center set up in Canada.

Canadian Consul General in Shanghai, Rick Savone, was present at the meeting.
