Yang Xiong meets Chicago Vice Mayor Steve Koch
杨雄会见芝加哥市市长代表 加强科技创新交流合作

IN his meeting yesterday with the visiting vice mayor of Chicago, Steve Koch, Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong said the two sister cities have enjoyed fruitful exchanges and cooperation over the past 30 years.

Yang said Shanghai is accelerating the development of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and is carrying out reform and opening to facilitate investment and trade. There are new opportunities for economic cooperation between the two cities.

He said that innovation is a key driving force in development. Shanghai is working hard to turn itself into a global innovation center. Shanghai and Chicago should encourage their universities and technology companies to expand cooperation in innovation.

Koch said that this year is the 30th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Chicago and Shanghai. The skyscraper, Shanghai Tower, is designed by Chicago architects and is a soaring monument of the friendship between the two cities.

Koch added that two cities will continue to show each other’s promotional videos online and in public places to strengthen mutual understandings and friendship between their peoples. Chicago is keen to widen exchanges and cooperation with Shanghai in science and technology.

Hanscom Smith, American consul general in Shanghai, joined the meeting.
