IN his meeting with Stefania Giannini, Italian minister of education, universities and research, on Thursday, Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong thanked Italy for accepting the role of “guest of honor” at this year’s China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair.
Yang said Shanghai has a long history of exchange with Italy. Xu Guangqi, a Shanghai native, began to study astronomy and mathematics under Italian Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci during the Ming Dynasty more than 400 years ago.
He said Shanghai and Milan are sister cities and have enjoyed close exchanges and cooperation, particularly when Shanghai was hosting World Expo 2010 and Milan was hosting World Expo 2015.
The mayor said Shanghai is accelerating the development of the pilot free trade zone and is gearing up reforms and opening to facilitate trade and investment. The city is striving to become a global innovation center. This provides more opportunities for cooperation with other countries, including Italy.
He added that Shanghai wants to strengthen exchange and cooperation with Italy in science and technology.
Giannini said Italy is glad to become the guest of honor of this fair. It gives Italian companies a good stage to exhibit their products and technologies and find partners from other countries.
She said Italy wants to enhance cooperation with China and help Shanghai to become a global innovation center. The two sides can expand cooperation in areas of environmental protection, education and sustainable urban development.
Italian Consul General in Shanghai Stefano Beltrame also joined the meeting.
