Yang Xiong meets Montreal mayor and delegation
杨雄晤加拿大蒙特利尔市市长 新一轮友好合作交流签约

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met his Montreal counterpart Denis Coderre and his delegation from Canada on Tuesday. They renewed a cooperation agreement and watched a performance by Chinese and Canadian students.

Yang said this year marks the 30th anniversary for the sister-city relationship between Shanghai and Montreal. The two cities have cooperated closely in economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education and environmental protection.

The mayor noted that Shanghai also has sisterly relationship with Quebec Province where Montreal is located. This further cemented Shanghai’s ties with Montreal.

Yang briefed the guests on Shanghai’s efforts to push for more reforms and opening, development in Shanghai Free Trade Zone, and the city’s drive to become a hub of innovation with global influence.

He said Shanghai is making its 13th Five-Year Plan and wants to learn from other big cities in the world, Montreal included, and to share experiences in tackling common problems.

Coderre said Montreal has long-term friendship with Shanghai. The new agreement signed by both sides has laid a solid foundation for cooperation in more areas.

He said Montreal is also an international metropolis like Shanghai. The two cities should strengthen cooperation to tackle their shared challenges.

Weldon Epp, Canadian consul-general in Shanghai, was present at the meeting.
