SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Gary D. Cohn, president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs, and his group last week.

Yang said Shanghai is building itself into an international financial center with support from the central government and is carrying out financial reforms and innovation in China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Shanghai will implement the 40 Measures of Financial Reform in the zone and welcomes foreign financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, to participate in the city’s transformation into an international financial center, the mayor said.

He told the guests that Shanghai is facilitating trade and investment through institutional reform and innovation. Custom procedures have been streamlined to cut the costs of importers and exporters. The city welcomes ideas from enterprises on improving the business environment.

Cohn said China’s robust development has brought a lot of opportunities to Goldman Sachs. His company is keen to share its expertise and take part in Shanghai Free Trade Zone development as well as in the city’s drive to become an international financial center.

Goldman Sachs is a New York-based investment banking and management company. It ranked 278th among the Fortune 500 companies last year.
