Yang Xiong talks with New Zealand ambassador

IN his meeting with New Zealand Ambassador to China John McKinnon on June 10, Mayor Yang Xiong said Shanghai and New Zealand have traditional friendship and Shanghai, the sister city of Dunedin since 1994, maintains close economic and trade ties with New Zealand.

He said Shanghai is developing itself into an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping. The Shanghai Free Trade Zone provides new opportunities for Shanghai to increase its trade and cooperation with New Zealand.

The mayor told the ambassador that Shanghai adopted 22 new policies to accelerate its transformation into a global innovation center and will step up international cooperation in innovation. The city government is keen to expand scientific and technological exchanges with New Zealand.

Yang said he believed the ambassador’s visit will help strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of agriculture, tourism, culture, and health care.

McKinnon said China is a big market and the potential for China-New Zealand trade and cooperation is huge. His country hopes to build strong economic ties with Shanghai and expand cooperation in education, tourism, science and technology as well as culture. New Zealand films will be shown at the Shanghai International Film Festival.

New Zealand Consul General in Shanghai Guergana Guermanoff joined the meeting.
